Chapter 4 - First Night

Amber rolled over onto her side. She had taken the makeshift bed Dawn had constructed. She could not sleep, and it was then she realised, her high-school dorm let Ezra, her boyfriend sleep in her bed. In primary, she was always scared and her mother would stay. This was the first time she wasn’t sleeping with someone else in her bed.

She tapped on Dawn’s nightstand, and realised… She was gone! Her hand frantically searched her nightstand for a torch, and it was then she heard it. A calling howl, and… a response? She crept over to the window and saw two yearling-looking wolves in a clearing down below. They seemed to be yipping and yapping at each other communicating a message. Then, the larger one flicked it’s tail and they strolled over to the gate. They seemed to form some different shape and, after a short while, lights flashed through the air, then they glided through the wall. Amber was perplexed by this power of theirs, though it still sent a shiver down her spine.

She reached over to her side, and in the drawer, found a sort of old project of Dawn’s. She opened it up and gasped in awe as it expanded out to form some sort of hologram.

“Passcode, name and purpose,” The hologram voice asked her, though you could sense boredom in it’s voice. Amber tried, and tried again until it was late into the night. Finally, she looked up to the clock, realising it was well past midnight. She was about to put it back into the drawer, when she heard the soft step of a person creeping into the dorm. She gasped softly and put the hologram projector into the drawer, closing it hurriedly.

She curled up into a ball, and for a second, almost transformed back into a phoenix. She quickly folded her wings and dove back into her clothes before Dawn opened the door. Dawn looked around suspiciously, then strolled over to her bedside table, where she took out a hologram, a new and updated one by the look of it, and started a voice recording.

Dawn whispered into the microphone, “Dear hologram, today the pack was preparing for the new kids’ 1st human birthday, and they told me to come for the celebration tomorrow. Normally, I never stay out from the university for two whole nights, but I guess tomorrow will be the exception,” She looked around and tucked herself into her bed. Amber contemplated this new information, was Dawn part of some kind of cult? A secret team? She shook her head, and finally fell asleep.
