Crystal Cavern Waystation

High in the Daybreak Pinnacles, where the northern branch of the mountains remains eternally frozen, lies the Crystal Cavern Waystation. This refuge, carved from ice by a group of weary travelers from Pelage, has become a sanctuary for those braving the treacherous journey across the mountains into Even.

The origins of Crystal Cavern are humble. In a desperate attempt to escape a relentless storm, a group of travelers hastily carved out a temporary shelter. Yet, as the ice never melted, subsequent travelers expanded the cave. It became a planned stop on the path with each subsequent group taking at least a day to carve and add to the structure, transforming it into a permanent haven.

The entrance to the waystation is marked by a grand arch of ice, glistening in the pale sunlight. Inside, the walls shimmer and glow, reflecting the Light in a myriad of colors. The air is crisp and cold, carrying the faint scent of snow and frozen forest.

The mountain crossing was brutal. We'd lost two of our number already when we came upon the Crystal Cavern. Suddenly, we were safe for a time, warm and able to rest. We took an extra day to expand one of the sleeping chambers. Leaving it to continue the journey was terrifying.

As travelers began using the Nobleclad Steeds to make the trip easier, stables were carved to offer protection for these mounts. Their breath forms clouds in the frigid air as they rest, their coats thick and warm against the cold.

Later, an area was added for Mountain Marauder vehicles that ensures travelers can safely park their small carriages. These vehicles, designed to navigate the rugged terrain, stand ready for the next leg of the journey.

The waystation is not without its dangers. The surrounding area is home to Spirit Eaters and other viscious predators that stalk the snowy landscape. Travelers must remain vigilant, especially if they find the cavern empty of human protectors.

Despite the perils, Crystal Cavern Waystation offers a moment of respite. The interior is a labyrinth of ice, with chambers and corridors that provide shelter and warmth. Fires burn in carefully constructed hearths, their flames adding to the colorful reflections of Light on the walls.

In one of the larger chambers, a communal area has been established. Here, travelers gather to share stories and warmth, their voices echoing softly in the icy expanse. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and shared hardship, a brief respite from the isolation of the journey.

The walls of the cavern are adorned with carvings and etchings, left by those who have passed through. Each mark tells a story, travelers leaving records of their reasons for braving the journey.

Crystal Cavern Waystation is a world wonder hidden in a frozen wilderness. It is a place where Light dances among ice crystals, where the harshness of the environment is tempered by the warmth of human connection. Traditions have developed that travelers will pack in extra rations to leave in the Waystation for those in need.

I'd heard of the Crystal Cavern, of course, but couldn't have predicted its beauty. When I stood within its walls, I knew that I had to stay for a while and give voice to my own creation in one of the rooms.

Here, in this frozen sanctuary, the passage of time feels almost suspended. Each moment is a precious gift, a fleeting reprieve from the relentless march of the journey. The waystation is a place where the past and present converge, where the echoes of those who came before linger in the air.

Crystal Cavern Waystation is more than just a shelter. It has begun to grow into a tiny community with a few brave souls choosing to make the harsh environment their home in order to serve as protectors for the structure.
