Reading challenge 2024

The Challenge

After Summer Camp, campers are encouraged to read 10 articles by different writers, to drop a like and a comment on each one, and then to share them with the community along with what you've learned from them and your goals for the next year.

Since I'm judging the "tradition that brings comfort" prompt, most of these will be from that list. After reading 199 articles, I wanted to share some of the treasures I found.

The Articles:

These are in no particular order:

Let's start off with a brilliant take on answering a bunch of prompts at one time by The Big G. I love her story telling style, and I dare you to read just the one article. She pulls the reader on through several articles, entertaining throughout and building her world around you.

The Ocean's Friends
Organization | Aug 3, 2024

A still-surviving descendant sect of ocean worship thinks of the ocean as a friend, not a god.

Thechosenone appeals to my anthropologist's heart by exploring the various swear words used throughout their world. Entertaining and informative, making the world feel rich and alive.

Tlcassis creates a story around a blessing that includes a character who doesn't fully understand the meaning of what is going on. The potential for disaster is tremendous and the character feels much more believable.

Marked for Good

A blessing and call for action.

DM Eilers shares a take on a matrilineal marriage ceremony that is unique. The young couple battle for dominance in a musical performance. Think about the implications for the society this comes from!

Do you like the show Leverage? Now imagine combining it with Santa Claus... and you'll have this delightful tradition from Kranjax. I couldn't help but follow the world after this article and I look forward to reading more.

One Tag, One Shot

There's something deliciously meta about sharing an article about the beauty of reading while doing a reading challenge. Nice one Frod0baggins!

This tradition from Jeffrey Lebowski is a great example of showing what is valuable in a world through their traditions. The species of turtle is beautiful, and the ritual is focused on the health of the world. No turtles are harmed in the hunt.

George Sanders's articles are full of story and entertainment. I would love to be able to write worldbuilding articles like he does! This one includes a character that fascinated me.

The Soul of the Wildlands
Tradition / Ritual | Aug 3, 2024

The mayor and her chief of staff hurried around the courtyard to put the last place settings on the tables. The chief of staff went over a mental checklist while the last utensils were straightened.

E. Christopher Clark has a fantastic sense of humor and a writing style that never fails to entertain. And now I want to go on another vacation.

Vacation
Tradition / Ritual | Jul 11, 2024

Whether you call it a vacation or a holiday, getting away from the mundanity of everyday life is just as treasured in the postapocalyptic paradise of Eden as it is everywhere else in the Clarkwoods Literary Universe—and maybe even more so.

Last, I wanted to highlight a non-English article. If you don't read German, take a moment to open this is your browser and have it translate for you. I was surprised how well the translations work now, and this one is worth a read. It starts with a story, then goes into the details of the tradition... and then turns everything around with a new interpretation at the end. I loved the "new information" and the twist as well as excellent story telling.

Besänftigungsritus
Tradition / Ritual | Jul 13, 2024

Ein Ritual der Faerie, welches Feen vom Zustand des Feenwahns heilt und sie zurück in ihre Heimat sendet.

My goals for the rest of the year:

I continue with my ongoing goal of finishing books 2 and 3 of Aubadeon. A big chunk of this worldbuilding summer camp was dedicated to sorting and organizing research that I needed for those stories, so hopefully I'll be in a better place to move forward.
